Matthew's Music

Examinations

GRADES While grade examinations are entirely optional, most of our students take them. Grade examinations have been taking place in the UK for over a hundred and fifty years. The series of (usually) eight graduated steps provides a useful framework for study and an incentive to progress. Syllabuses, which have broadened in recent years, now contain a greater number of contemporary and popular pieces than hitherto, while scales and arpeggios are no longer mandatory. Jazz pianists and jazz flautists are also catered for within the grade system. While the Associated Board is the main provider of grade examinations, it is not the only examining board and should not be regarded as though it is.

Parents (and students) who may be concerned about the rate of progress through the grades should be reassured that, on the whole, one grade a year represents quite smooth and satisfactory progress, although there will be plenty of exceptions to this; the enjoyment of music should be paramount.

it is likely that working for grade examinations helps school students in particular to derive the maximum benefit from instrumental study. Learning an instrument enhances other areas of academic study, and tends to assist progress at school generally. And a welcome development in recent years has been the integration of UCAS points, which may cout towards university entrance, with the grade system.

DIPLOMAS Many of our students go on to take instrumental diplomas. These are professional qualifications which require thorough preparation.  In line with modifications to technical requirements within the grade system, scales and arpeggios no longer feature in many diplomas. However, a strong technique is essential, allied with a broad musical insight. Poise, total command of the instrument and a confident platform manner are essential for success in higher examinations.

While we encourage all students to maximise their potential, a musician's principal objective should be the cultivation and enjoyment of a wide musical repertoire. A knowledge and understanding and undestanding of music, whether tested by examination or not, will confer lifelong, life-enhancing benefits.
